The New Mexico Portfolios
Black and white photographs of the spirit and mystery found in form in the natural world of New Mexico.
The deep magic, mystery and spirit of life are readily present in the crisp,
thin air and brilliant light of New Mexico. There find room to explore and encounter
the unknown and unexpected in New Mexico’s remote mountains, open rangelands,
sculpted badlands, ancient ruins and broad high deserts.
I spent 17 years working with earth in northern New Mexico as a professional
landscape designer
and gardener and lived primitively in the mountains there. This united
me with the natural world.
I opened to and was absorbed by the elements and nature’s rhythms.
I came to feel no separation between myself and the land, or the sky, the other forms of life around me.
The photographs presented in my New Mexico Portfolios are encounters
with the spirit of the natural world in New Mexico. The images range from abstract to literal,
the common thread being form manifesting in and from the light. Each of these images
contains my vision of the spirit of New Mexico in the natural world.
My process of creating these photographs is based in the ways of the original masters of
American landscape photography, using our current digital technologies.
The crafting of the print is a critical aspect of my process.
Being the artist and technician of the image from camera to print enables me to produce
prints in which the essence of a moment photographed shines through
as it did for me as I snapped the shutter. Thus, I can convey fully through my art the
deep respect and love I have for the natural world and for New Mexico.
New Mexico Portfolio I
These photographs focus particularly on silouettes and light against shadow.
Process
I personally create each print individually
using archival ultrachrome
pigment inks and the finest archival papers.
Images are created with a digital SLR camera. Prints are made using a process
based in the darkroom
printing techniques of the early masters of photography adapted to current
technology and digital tools.
The inks are UV stable and have a longevity rating of 138 years when protected
from direct UV exposure.
Prints are available in editions of 3 and
5, varying with the print size. The portfolio
price list
contains information
about the sizes of available prints.
The prints in this portfolio are signed and
numbered inverso with pencil and emboss stamped with
my studio insignia below the image on the bottom right of the paper.
Each print also has an individually numbered holographic stamp that corresponds to a
signed certificate of authenticity.
